The Hangar, Delta’s Global Innovation Center, incubates and invents human-centered solutions that delight customers and empower employees. From biometric boarding kiosks to pre-selecting meals with a mobile device, many of the innovative products you see before, during, and after a flight on Delta start in The Hangar. At The Hangar, we are continually looking to embrace new technologies and processes that push the boundaries of innovation in the travel industry. To further this objective, we are seeking an Experience Design Advisor to join our team. We're looking for someone who is passionate about delivering human-centered solutions for real-world, large-scale problems that impact the lives of our customers and employees, ultimately resulting in sustaining Delta Air Lines’ market leadership and growth.

Responsibilities

The Experience Design Advisor is responsible for the direction and oversight of The Hangar’s design vision, strategy, and capabilities, as well as enterprise-wide education and advocacy on the value and importance of design. The following capabilities are desired:

  • Lead design activities in cross-functional development teams to create industry leading travel experiences throughout the travel journey (at home, at the gate, in-flight, in-airport, etc.) including service recovery experiences and processes
  • Design and deliver digital and physical artifacts across a variety of environments.
  • Leading design research to propose and deliver innovative solutions that continually improve products/services that put the “human first”
  • Consult and collaborate with talented teams in a supportive, complex environment and develop an understanding of broader organizational context and goals.
  • Providing guidance, oversight, and mentorship to junior designers
  • Working with the team to ensure exceptional design deliverables; set and exceed best practices and standards, measurable impacts, and design integrity in the final product
  • Motivating the team to create designs that constantly push boundaries to keep Delta at the forefront of innovation and design
  • Use storytelling and persuasion techniques that build trust with stakeholders and establish long-term relationships.
  • Benchmarking airline, travel, and non-travel endemic experiences and best practices

What You Need To Succeed (minimum Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in a design-related field (e.g., Industrial design, architecture, etc.)
  • 10+ years previous experience in product or service design and/or innovation
  • Strong knowledge of design standards, industry guidelines, and best practices with the ability to push beyond to uncover new and distinctive solutions.
  • Advanced knowledge in design software such as Figma and Adobe Creative Suite
  • Experience in showcasing innovative and creative vision with a passion for human-centered design and strong customer orientation
  • The ability to understand market trends and translate them into actionable business strategies
  • Strong understanding of design and user research tools and techniques
  • Strong ability to give and accept critique, coaching, and feedback.
  • Must possess an inquisitive and creative mind with a proven ability to influence and collaborate with others while driving results
  • A strong track record of achieving challenging objectives
  • Must be independent and self-directed but able to work and influence a team of creative individuals
  • Must be willing to take calculated risk and mange expectations
  • Ability to execute across a wide range of products and tight deadlines
  • Ability to adapt to business challenges and rapidly pivot when necessary

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (preferred Qualifications)

  • Strong business acumen, understanding of a variety of business practices and familiarity with the airline or travel industry
  • Experience working in a corporate innovation space and/or working with emerging technologies e.g., AI, VR, IoT
  • Experience sourcing and managing freelance designers and artists to enhance design capacity as necessary while managing project budget constraints and deadlines
  • Working knowledge in 3D CAD design software such as Solidworks or Fusion 360
  • Prior experience in physical product design
