Join the Wichita Transit team! Driving with transit as a FULL-TIME Paratransit Van Driver provides the opportunity to enhance the lives and increase the mobility of hundreds of people in the Wichita community who are unable to utilize the traditional bus system due to physical or cognitive disabilities. Every day our Van Drivers provide hundreds of trips between residences and local destinations for employment, doctor appointments, and other daily needs.

The Van Driver is an active position that provides rider assistance with boarding vans and securing wheelchairs or other mobility aids while providing the opportunity to build friendly relationships with regular riders.  Paratransit riders are some of the most fun and appreciative Wichitans you will meet. To provide the best possible service to our community, Transit relies on a dedicated team of service-oriented Van Drivers that are able to reliably arrive fit for work on time regardless of weather and traffic conditions.

The driver's seat is an office with a view. With this origin-to-destination service, driving vans provides a constant variety of routes that offer a beautiful way to see the cityscapes and neighborhoods throughout every part of the city.

Examples of Work Performed

 

  • Operate the van in the safest manner.
  • Provides limited assistance to passengers with disabilities with wheelchair loading, securing and unloading.
  • Writes up work order cards for van defects so maintenance can repair the vehicle.
  • Ensures that correct fare is collected.

Requirements of Work

 

  • Ability to read, speak, and write the English language sufficiently to communicate with the general public, to understand traffic signs and signals in the English language, to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records in a clear and legible manner.
  • Knowledge of and ability to work with the four functions of mathematics.
  • Ability to read maps, understand and maintain time points and schedules.
  • Ability to write in a clear and legible manner.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other employees, representatives of other organizations,officials, and the public.
  • Ability to answer questions regarding other routes and services.
  • Ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in emergencies and other unusual situations.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the city and names and locations of streets.
  • Ability to: sit a maximum of 60 consecutive minutes for all or most of a shift; to stand and move about for up to 10 minutes per hour; to walk up to 10 consecutive minutes up to 50 feet; to lift, push or pull a minimum of 50 lbs.; to push or pull with force of up to 50 lbs. to up to 10 feet; and  to bend, kneel and squat repetitively for short, sustained periods.
  • Ability to perform work functions on various hard surfaces.
  • Ability to engage in hand manipulation, including fingers, wrist turning, grasping and pinching from occasionally to frequently.
  • Ability to occasionally reach forward and to either side.
  • Ability to occasionally bend and twist trunk.
  • Valid Kansas Class A or B commercial driver's license (CDL) is preferred.  Passenger endorsement is also preferred. 
  • If you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country. 
  • An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

  • Must possess a valid, unrestricted driver's license over the past three (3) years without any moving violations.
  • Two years of customer service experience.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.  

Preferred Experience and Training
  • Successful completion of high school.
  • A valid Class A or Class B CDL with airbrake and passenger endorsements. If you are a Canadian or Mexican citizen, you will be required to have or obtain a CDL from your home country. 
  • Prior Commercial driving experience.

Offers of employment are contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical, which includes drug screening, and upon satisfactory evaluation.

This is a safety sensitive position subject to the rules and regulations of the FTA Drug & Alcohol policy for required testing.  You will be subject to pre-employment Drug & Alcohol Testing, Random Testing, and Reasonable Suspicion Testing.  You will be required to fully comply with all operational safety rules and regulations established by Wichita Transit.

This position is represented by Teamsters Local 795 and includes Teamsters Pension.
