High School Biology Research Consultant ID - 3318

Position Overview


We are seeking a knowledgeable and experienced researcher in biology to provide mentorship and guidance to a highly motivated 9th-grade student with a strong interest in pursuing summer research opportunities. The ideal candidate will have expertise in rapidly advancing areas of biology, preferably in computational biology fields such as bioinformatics, and a passion for fostering the next generation of researchers.

Key Responsibilities

Provide Mentorship: Offer guidance to the student and her parents on navigating summer research opportunities with universities, academic institutions, or research organizations.

Opportunity Identification: Assist in identifying relevant research programs, internships, or grants such as the NSF Research Assistantships for High School Students (RAHSS).

Application Support: Provide guidance on preparing compelling applications for identified opportunities, including assisting the 9th grader with the preparation of required materials (e.g., resumes, personal statements).

Research Field Exploration: Provide insights into promising areas of biology research, such as synthetic biology, genomics, microbiome research, cancer biology, and environmental biology, with a particular focus on computational biology and bioinformatics.

Skill Development: Recommend resources or activities to enhance the student's understanding and readiness for a research environment, including introductory tools, software, or readings in bioinformatics and related fields.

Qualifications


Advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D. preferred) in biology, bioinformatics, or a closely related field.
Proven experience in computational biology, bioinformatics, or other cutting-edge areas of biology research.
Familiarity with academic and research institutions and their summer program opportunities for high school students.
