Job Description

The Direct Support Professional plays a critical role in providing hands-on support and guidance to adults with autism and other neuro-differences at a Skills Enrichment Center. DSPs work directly with individuals to help them develop life skills, social abilities, and vocational competencies, all while promoting independence, dignity, and self-confidence.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Client Support and Care:
    • Provide direct assistance to individuals with autism in developing personal, social, and vocational skills.
    • Assist with daily living activities, including personal care, meal preparation, transportation, and medication management when necessary.
    • Support individuals in maintaining personal hygiene and completing everyday tasks, encouraging autonomy and independence.

  • Skill Development:

  • Collaboration and Communication:
    • Collaborate with team members, family members, and other care providers to ensure a coordinated approach to support.
    • Maintain accurate documentation of daily activities, client progress, and any incidents in accordance with organizational policies.
    • Communicate effectively with clients to foster trust and ensure their needs are understood and met.
  • Health and Safety:
    • Ensure the physical and emotional safety of clients at all times by following safety protocols and guidelines.
    • Provide first aid or medical assistance when needed, and report any health or safety concerns to supervisors immediately.
  • Professional Development:
    • Participate in ongoing training related to autism, communication strategies, and behavioral management techniques.
    • Stay informed about best practices in supporting individuals with autism and incorporate new knowledge into daily practices.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience working with individuals with autism or developmental differences is highly desirable.
  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and patient in stressful situations.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation (may be required depending on role).
