ABOUT RAN

For more than 30 years, Rainforest Action Network (RAN) has campaigned to preserve forests, protect the climate and uphold human rights by challenging corporate power and systemic injustice through research, education, partnerships, non-violent direct action, grassroots organizing, strategic campaigns and communications. We are committed to working with Indigenous communities and frontline communities directly impacted by profit-driven systems of injustice. In partnership with allies from around the world, RAN challenges corporations to stop destructive operations, respect human rights, and adopt comprehensive policies that reduce their contributions to climate change. RAN is committed to doing what is necessary, not only what is considered politically feasible.

RAN is looking for a motivated, passionate and hard-working Senior Corporate Engagement Specialist to lead engagement with companies named in our Keep Forests Standing campaign, and work together with our global team. This position will use a high level of professionalism and savvy negotiating skills to pressure some of the biggest agribusiness and forestry companies in the world as well as their multinational customers. Whether corresponding with a consumer goods manufacturing company, representing RAN on a panel discussion, leading a multi-day negotiation on forest policies, or in a team meeting, the ideal candidate will enjoy interacting with people on a variety of levels while remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient.

This is a highly collaborative position, working closely with our corporate engagement and campaign staff in the U.S., Europe and Asia. The ideal candidate will have strong people and communication skills, be highly organized, and a strong writer. This position is full-time and salaried with excellent benefits and reports directly to the Forest Campaign Director. This position is based in the United States.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  • Work with the Forests Team to design corporate campaign strategies that support forest protection and uphold the rights of forest communities
  • Work with the Forest Campaign Director and Forest Policy Director to lead negotiations on forest-risk commodity procurement and production policies
  • Build and maintain relationships with corporate actors throughout forest-risk supply chains in tropical forest regions (Indonesia & Brazil)
  • Undertake policy analysis and engagement with consumer goods manufacturing companies to inform our annual scorecard evaluating corporate actions to eliminate deforestation and human rights abuse from forest-risk commodity supply chains
  • Prepare evidence-based content for publications and briefing documents on topics related to forest policies and supply chain accountability systems
  • Track global trends and analyze research to inform corporate engagement strategies
  • Maintain issue expertise on tropical forests, agribusiness and forestry sectors, and forest-risk commodity supply chains as well as political and economic issues that relate to the campaign
  • Act as a public spokesperson for RAN with the media and at industry forums in the US, Europe and Asia
  • Attend regular meetings with the global team and report to the Forest Campaign Director
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key allies
  • Support other aspects of RAN's work (e.g. campaign, organizing and fundraising activities)
  • Contribute to building inclusive and collaborative team culture, in conjunction with RAN staff based in the U.S. and internationally

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in corporate, human rights, and/or environmental campaigning and conducting corporate negotiations, ideally within the context of corporate campaigning
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English that are adaptable to presentations and correspondence to corporations, policy revisions, and publications
  • Experience in public speaking, including with the media
  • Deep subject knowledge on some of the following topics: forest policies, human rights policies, forestry and agribusiness sectors, supply chain accountability systems (supply chain mapping and engagement, traceability, human rights and environmental due diligence, monitoring, reporting and verification systems, grievance mechanisms), and land sector accounting
  • Strong organizational, time management and project management skills
  • A proven track record of working effectively in teams
  • Commitment to uphold RAN's values in their behavior and work toward racial justice and a diverse, equitable and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates differences
  • Commitment to nonviolent direct action principles
  • Ability to travel frequently, up to 40%, in the U.S., Europe, and Asia and willingness to work flexible hours for meetings with corporations and our global team based in the U.S., Europe, and Asia

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in, or with partners, Indigenous and frontline communities, in tropical forest regions, particularly Indonesia and Brazil
  • Language skills from regions in which we work are a plus, including but not limited to Indonesian, Portuguese, and Japanese
  • Previous experience working with a cross-cultural team across global time zones
